Sometimes, Discipline Isn’t Enough

“And I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. I want to do what is right, but I can’t. I want to do what is good, but I don’t. I don’t want to do what is wrong, but I do it anyway.” Romans‬ ‭7:18-19‬ ‭

Hello, glad to come your way again. I had a great weekend. Hope yours went well?

This Bible text really speaks to me that I want to share with this community today. I have learnt that, sometimes no matter how strong willed you are, you will still fall flat on your face when it comes to dealing with some bad or addictive habits. Sometimes, it is easy to counsel people and give them “steps” to beat it or “pray away” the situation- which can be a religious way to cop out. And yet, they still struggle.

With little understanding of the situation, we tend to judge those people we have counseled or prayed for that they are not disciplined, lack self governance or they are “not trying hard enough.”

Please listen to me; EVERYBODY has an issue which will let us talk like the scripture I just quoted. You know why? Because if life was that easy where everything can be fixed with resolutions, “mindmatics” & discipline, then we will never need God at all.

This scripture talks about the author’s personal struggle in conquering sinful tendencies. He was a Christian- in fact an apostle. He was a church leader that had people that look up to him in the community, yet he had struggles. Please, even monks do struggle! Understand that! Your “role model” perhaps is going through hell trying to overcome certain habits at the expense of his fame, fortune and reputation.

I wrote this to let you know, it is human and normal that discipline sometimes is not enough. In life, if all that you have is your discipline, I feel sorry for you because at a point, discipline is going to fail you. Keep on living and you’ll discover that.

Yesterday, in this part of our world was Independence Day, and even though people commemorated it with food, fun, celebration and fireworks. You ask yourself, “are people really free?”. So many are fighting serious addictions, bad habits, and the issue of sin which has caused them to throw their hands up in despair wanting to give up. A country can be independent, but the souls of that country NOT.

I want to speak to you through this post that DON’T GIVE UP! The verse of this chapter I quoted ends well on a good note, and we will look at that next week. We should have more empathy and understand difficult situations.

It is okay for people to touch us with their ugly and uncomfortable situations, and we not shooing them away. The truth is, what about if they have really tried their best?! Are we GOD to judge them as failures? What about you having a facade of perfection, yet quietly struggling? We can do better, good people!

SOMETIMES, DISCIPLINE IS NOT ENOUGH!…

May God keep you safe and sound! For those whose self-worth has been crushed due to your personal struggles, I pray for healing and restoration. I truly do!
